About

JAZZ IS MOVEMENT +++ JAZZ IS CULTURAL EXCHANGE +++ JAZZ KNOWS NO BOUNDARIES, NEITHER LINGUISTIC NOR GEOGRAPHIC +++ JAZZ WAS WORLD MUSIC LONG BEFORE THE TERM WAS INVENTED.

JAZZ MOVES is an initiative stemming from the Jazz scene in Hamburg that wants to strengthen an export of Hamburg Jazz to other, international scenes and an exchange of Jazz with them.

HAMBURG, THE JAZZHARBOUR
As a famed ‘gateway to the world’, Hamburg is a transshipment point for the widest variety of goods. Standstill is a word that doesn’t exist in Hamburg. Nestled between seamens’ tales and harbour pubs, between opera, musicals and the jangling noise of the streets, a multi- faceted Jazz scene with an international aura pulses vibrantly beneath a skyline of huge cranes marking this port city with a population in the mil- lions.

SEAFARERS OF JAZZ
Jazz has a long-standing tradition in Hamburg. Jazz legends and international stars such as Herb Geller, Wolfgang Schlüter, Trilok Gurtu, Nils Landgren and Vladyslav Sendecki live and work here. Names like the Tingvall Trio, Nighthawks, Nils Wülker and Gabriel Coburger are ample proof: a very promising up-and-coming generation is evolving here, too.

SHIPBUILDERS OF JAZZ
This lively environment has brought forth plenty of professional players with international reputations and networks. Concert management firms, major and minor labels, and both physical and digital distributors have all found a home here. The course of educational training in Jazz offered at Hamburg’s University for Music and Theatre is one of the most highly esteemed in Germany and ranks on an international scale.

MARINAS FOR JAZZ
Jazz has lots of places where it can tie up to a pier: from the FABRIK to the Elbphilharmonie and on to long-established Jazz clubs such as Birdland, Stellwerk and Cotton Club, all the way to a number of new and exciting venues for playing. Hamburg has 3 major festivals with an international orientation: Elbjazz, ÜberJazz and the Hamburg Jazz Open.

PARTNERS OF JAZZ
Jazz profits from active public attention in Hamburg, a media metropolis. Radio forms a focal point: NDR (a North German state broadcaster) is a media partner for many Jazz events. For decades the NDR Bigband has travelled the world over as an ambassador for Hamburg Jazz. Private foundations and sponsors from the world of commerce support artists and festivals on a sustainable basis. With its agencies, offices and institutions, the City of Hamburg itself supports Jazz at all levels. Partner- ship has a high status in this Hanseatic businessman’s town. Numerous partnerships between cities all over the globe form an ideal starting point for the international network Jazz Moves, which, among other sites, is going to be presented in Marseille in 2013.
